On the 4th of January 2022, Dr. Alexey Gromyko, Director of the Institute of Europe (Russian Academy of Sciences), took part in online international Peace & Planet conference, dedicated to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference, which had been rescheduled to a later date due to the pandemic concerns.
The conference was moderated by Joseph Gerson, president of the Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security and vice-president of the International Peace Bureau, headed by Reiner Brown.
Peace & Planet has initiated international conferences, mobilizations, and side events on the eves of previous Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conferences, with Ban Ki-moon joining the debate in 2010, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Sergio Duarte and others over the year. Peace & Planet has organized side events during NPT PrepComs.
A number of speakers were invited from movements in nuclear- and non-nuclear weapons states. They were asked to share their expectations for the NPT in the context of Article VI commitments and what the governments should do to ensure full implementation of the Treaty, including fulfilling prior obligations.
